What Is a Dental Emergency?

While brushing, flossing, and eating healthy are ways to help protect your teeth, sometimes dental emergencies are unavoidable. A dental emergency can be caused by several factors:

Accidents
Sports-related injuries
Tooth decay
Infection

You will need to visit an emergency dentist if you have any of the following:

Traumatic injury to your mouth, jaw, or teeth
Severe pain
Uncontrolled bleeding in your mouth
Severe swelling in your mouth, face, or neck

What to Do in a Dental Emergency?

1. Toothache

Call our office. Explain your symptoms and ask to be seen as soon as possible.
Ease the pain. Take over-the-counter pain medicine that works for you, but do NOT put the pills on your sore tooth. Hold an ice pack against your face at the spot of the sore tooth.
Do not put a heating pad, a hot water bottle or any other source of heat on your jaw. The heat will make things worse instead of better.

2. Knocked-out Tooth

If the knocked-out tooth is an adult tooth, we may be able to save it, but you must act quickly.
If the tooth looks clean, put it back in its place (its socket). If this is not possible, or if there’s a chance that the tooth might be swallowed, put it in a container of cold milk.
Go to our office, or to the nearest dentist, right away.
If you get help within 10 minutes, there is a fair chance that the tooth will be able to be saved.

3. Broken Tooth

Broken teeth can almost always be restored.
Call our office and explain what happened. We will see you as soon as possible and determine what treatment is required in order to fix the tooth.
If it’s a small break, we may only need to use a white filling to fix the tooth.
If the break is significant, a root canal may be needed. Your tooth may also need a crown (also called a cap).

Dealing with Dental Emergencies

When you experience a dental emergency, your first step should be to call us! We will fit you into our schedule as soon as possible so Dr. Braun can assess and relieve your discomfort.

If you are in pain, you can take over-the-counter pain medicine that works for you.
If there is swelling, you can put a cold compress against your face at the spot of the swollen area.
If there is excess bleeding, you will want to apply gauze to try to slow the bleeding until you are able to visit your emergency dentist in Sidney.
If a tooth has fallen out, there is a chance it will take root again. Try to put it back into its socket, or store it in your cheek. If the socket is too swollen or you fear you will swallow your tooth, protect it in a container of cold milk.
If something is stuck between your teeth, try using dental floss very gently to remove the object. Never use a sharp object to poke between your teeth.
If a filling has fallen out, put a piece of softened sugarless gum into the spot it fell from. This will protect the area for a short time and help reduce the chances of pain.
