Sedation

The Root Canal Process

Root canal treatments at Sidney Centre Family Dentistry can usually be completed in only one visit.  

 

  • Treatment plan and diagnosis: To determine what's causing your problems, an x-ray of the tooth is required. If an abscess is present - an area of infection around the root of the tooth- antibiotics may be prescribed. This will help reduce the infection so the area is able to be frozen with local anesthetic before treatment is initiated, ensuring the treatment is not painful.
  • Treatment: Local anesthetic is given to freeze the tooth. Then an access to the pulp chamber is made, and the infected tissue is removed from the tooth with a series of files. The space is then disinfected and a filling material is placed to seal up the tooth. A root canal treatment tooth is at a higher risk of fracturing, so ideally after the root canal a crown should be placed on the tooth to protect it.
